Get Rid of Your Oars!

What’s the worst that could happen? Outside of the fact that you will be stranded in the middle of the river or lake, waiting for hours until you see an inkling of help coming your way…. really what’s the worst that could happen?!

I can tell you the BEST thing that will happen to you. And that is facing fear one on one in the face. You no longer have your oars to help guide you. You can no longer row around the fears that you have.

Reasons of why you are afraid to start your next project

1. You have a fear of failure – You are so afraid of failure that you are scared shitless and won’t at least trying anything. What if my projects do not come out the way I envisioned them? What if my recent startup fails and I have to close shop? What if no one comes to my blog?

2. You have a fear of others’ opinions (esp. your peers)- What if my friends/family criticize what I am doing? What if they don’t get it?

3. Comfortable -Where you are right now feels a whole lot better than moving a step forward with your project.

4. Staring into the abyss- Starting your next project and not knowing what will happen next is freaking scary! You are afraid that all of a sudden you will be alone because none of your friends are doing this (trust me that’s a good thing).

How to Get Rid of Your Oars

Plain and simple. Face them! Get motivated by them!

A good friend of mine

[does] not believe in fearlessness. I think fear is a fabulous tool for us!… it’s a tool because when you feel it, it means that this matters! It means that this is important and you need to pay attention to it! … So hone on it!

I was lucky enough to realize at an early age that I needed to use fear as motivation. I just needed to attack them. As I have gone throughout life especially in my younger years, I would make it a point to conquer my fears as I came across them. For example, I used to have an intense fear of roller coasters and one day on a school band trip to a theme park in North Carolina, I decided to give my fear an eff you and finally went on my first roller coaster! I have been hooked ever since and always look forward to the next time I can make it out to a theme park. The most recent fear I faced was on my 25th birthday where I decided to jump off cliffs in Jamaica. It literally took me about 3 hours to do it. There was no doubt in my mind that I was going to leave and not jump off this cliff of about 40 feet! I knew I would regret it later.

So my friends, face fear and attack them! Get rid of your oars so that it will leave you no choice.

On to you….
